Monarch Butterflies and Milkweed Species Found on Mississippi’s Barrier Islands

Saturday, May 18, 2024 - 10:00am

CREC-Crosby Arboretum
370 Ridge Road
Picayune, Mississippi 39466

Saturday, May 18, 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.

Join Holley Muraco to learn about milkweed species found in coastal Mississippi and how to use them in your home landscape. Monarch butterflies and their dependence on milkweed for survival provide a unique opportunity to evaluate various species and habitats for health. Holley is an assistant research professor for The Coastal ONE Health program at the Coastal Research & Extension Center in Biloxi and designs multi-disciplinary, collaborative projects that demonstrate that the health of people is closely connected to the health of animals and our shared environment. One such project is assessing the OE parasite loads in monarch butterflies in urban areas in comparison to those on Mississippi’s barrier islands. Program is free to members, and $5 for non-members.
